Call for tender – Research on Environmental Sustainability and Energy Efficiency of Electric Vehicles

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile – European Bureau (FIA EB) is seeking proposals for comprehensive research on the environmental sustainability and energy efficiency of Electric Vehicles (EVs).

This research aims to investigate variations in sustainability and efficiency among different EV models, contributing to a nuanced understanding of their environmental impact and the formulation of policy recommendations.

    Research Objectives:

The selected contractor will be responsible for conducting research in the following key areas:

    1. Lifecycle Emissions:
    • Analyse emissions associated with manufacturing, battery production, vehicle use, and end-of-life disposal or recycling.
    • Compare these emissions with those of internal combustion engine vehicles to assess the net environmental benefits of EV adoption.
    1. Sustainability of Manufacturing Processes:
    • Focus on factors such as raw material extraction, supply chain transparency, energy sources used in manufacturing, and waste management.
    • Identify areas for improvement and guide efforts to minimize the environmental footprint of EV production.
    1. Real-World Energy Efficiency:
    • Examine factors impacting energy consumption, including driving behavior, external factors (e.g., temperature), vehicle weight, aerodynamics, and accessory usage.
    • Compare the energy efficiency of different EV models to inform consumer decision-making.
    1. Battery Life and Second-Life Applications:
    • Explore battery degradation rates, strategies for extending battery life, and the feasibility of repurposing used EV batteries for energy storage applications.
    • Understand the environmental implications of battery production, usage, and disposal to identify improvement opportunities.
    1. Transparency and Consumer Information:
    • Assess the comprehensiveness and accuracy of environmental labels, energy consumption ratings, and lifecycle assessments provided by manufacturers.
    • Identify gaps and propose recommendations for standardized and transparent information to empower consumers.

    Proposal Submission:

Interested parties are invited to submit detailed proposals outlining their approach, methodology, timeline, and budget for the research project.

Proposals should be sent to Diogo Pinto, FIA EB Policy Director, at dpinto@fia.com  by 31st December 2023.

    Selection Criteria:

The selection will be based on the following criteria:

    1. Demonstrated expertise in environmental research, with a focus on automotive sustainability.
    2. Experience in conducting lifecycle assessments and studies related to electric vehicles.
    3. Clear and feasible research methodology.
    4. Budget competitiveness.

    Timeline:

    • Proposal Submission Deadline: 31/12/2023
    • Contractor Selection: 31/01/2024
    • Research Commencement: 01/03/2024
    • Delivery of final report in English (incl. executive summary and policy recommendations): 31/08/2024

    Budget and payment:

A maximum of 60,000 EUR (including VAT if applicable) is available; it should include associated costs (e.g., travel and accommodation) for a presentation of the research in Brussels in September 2024. 40% of the agreed costs will be paid once the candidate is appointed and 60% once the research is concluded and the final report approved.
